| Earlier Athlon 64 live news here 10/27/03 AMD Opteron 140 Starring as AMD Athlon 64 FX-43 - X-bit labs "Clocked at 1.40GHz, AMD Opteron 140 processor has 1MB of L2 cache, dual-channel memory controller and has no architecture differences with AMD Athlon 64 FX-51 processor clocked at 2.20GHz. Performance of this chip is hardly sufficient for gaming applications, but some hardware enthusiasts may want to acquire such processor in order to upgrade to a Socket 940 platform and get an AMD Athlon 64 FX-51 processor eventually" 10/23/03 Firm BOXXes clever with Athlon 64 workstation - the inquirer "While we were at the Athlon64 launch last month, there were a few systems that caught out eye for one reason or another. Most were rather ho-hum, but a few stood out, a lot. The Monarch not-quite-small-form-factor Hornet, the Shuttle SFF Athlon64 box, and the Alienware machine were notable in one way or another amid a sea of beige boxes. One really stood out though, and that was the GameBOXX from BOXX Technologies." 10/21/03 AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Goes Below $400! - X-bit labs "A reason why the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ microprocessors are available for a relatively low price may be the fact that AMD is preparing the launch of a higher-performance AMD Athlon 64 3400+ processor, though, no one at AMD would confirm this information. " 10/19/03 AMD's Athlon FX51 on allocation - the inquirer "Have a look at New Egg's page, Yes Micro, and E Cost. Here in the UK, dabs.com says there may well be availability in less than one week. Currently it is more likely that AMD will in generally concentrate on Socket 939 chips, but will also unveil an affordable 90nm chip in Socket 754 form-factor with AMD64 instructions. At least, the volume of Socket 754 chips in Q2 next year suggests that there will be something else than mobile and cost-effective CPUs in such form-factor" 10/06/03 AMD 64 'sold out already' - computing ""The product is going to come through but in small quantities to start with. I'm sure AMD will be able to ramp up production fast to cope with the demand." The chips will appeal initially to enthusiasts, early adopters and gamers, arriving in time for the Christmas rush. Among the big PC brands supporting the new processor, Fujitsu Siemens and Packard Bell have already announced Athlon 64 systems, with HP planning to introduce one in the fourth quarter." 10/03/03 Taiwan Inc unhappy about six layer Athlon 64 boards - the inquirer "Ding! There's the motherboard cost factor again. If you put four sockets on the motherboard (the norm for Opteron-class motherboards), it makes the trace layouts very very hard to get satisfactory for non-registered DIMMs with four sockets in close proximity, especially with the 940-style signal layout. There is nothing stopping somebody taking an 940 pin socket design and tweaking it for non-registered mode. This probably means losing DIMM sockets or adding layers in order to keep the trace lengths down." 09/30/03 AMD to Support Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 on AMD Athlon 64 "AMD today announced support for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 on AMD Athlon 64 processors based on AMD64 technology. Even as such the CPU is awesome and it's without out a doubt faster then my Pentium4 3GHz system and at the same time being a LOT cooler and smoother to the "feel". Stability remains the same and it worked at first try not 4 boards and a green light. I was extremely happy with my Pentium4 system but I'm even happier with this system. It does what I use it for even faster then the Pentium and the best part is guyz.. It's going to do it even faster next year. So for the same price as a 3.2Ghz P4 chunking at 65c or a cooler Athlon64 which is just waiting to be unleashed the choice is simple for me.. This one is a keeper" 09/29/03 64-bit computers shine -- but not because of 64 bits - South Bend Tribune "So what's the big deal about bits? A 32-bit processor can handle up to 4 billion bytes of memory -- an amount rarely approached in ordinary desktop computing today. By comparison, a 64-bit chip can address 18 billion billion bytes." 09/28/03 Tests of AMD's 64-bit PCs: Fastest yet - CNN Initial tests by PC World magazine show that 32-bit software runs "very well" on the Athlon 64 machines. "These systems produced some of the fastest test results we've seen," the magazine said on its Web site PCWorld.com. Intel, whose processors still ship with higher speeds than AMD's new offerings, says the PC market is not yet ready for the switch and 32-bit chips have not reached their limits. 09/27/03 Microsoft To Support AMD, Intel 64-Bit Chips - Grid Today "Microsoft Corp on Tuesday unveiled a version of its Windows XP operating system for Advanced Micro Devices Inc's new Athlon 64 processor and said the system would also work with a 64-bit desktop chip from Intel Corp if the company develops one" 09/27/03 Desktop Competitive Performance Guide - AMD 09/27/03 AMD Athlon 64 Based Notebook PC Review - Digit-Life 09/27/03 AMD Athlon 64 launch party coverage - Sudhian 09/27/03 Athlon 64 without heatspreader photos - T-break 09/27/03 Athlon 64 Chipset Comparison: ALi, Nvidia, VIA - AMD Zone 09/27/03 Motherboard makers show high interest in ULi’s K8 chipsets - DigiTimes "ULi Electronics is set to debut in December the world’s first single-chip solution for the Athlon 64 from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). For example, RSA BSAFE Crypto-C 6.1 encryption and decryption operations demonstrate a performance improvement of 1.5 to 3 times more than the number of operations per second achieved with RSA BSAFE Crypto-C 6.0.3 software (32-bit)." 09/26/03 HCL, Wipro, Zenith to ship AMD's 64-bit processor - Times of India "HCL Infosystems, Wipro and Zenith have decided to ship PCs with AMD's newest Athlon 64-bit processor, a move that would enable Intel's smaller competitor to be on a firmer footing in India than it has been so far. In fact, AMD had Microsoft India at the launch on Friday, as a leading software partner that would support its 64-bit processor." 09/26/03 Sun figures in Athlon 64 mystery - the inquirer "A large part of Sun's business is in workstations. The Athlon 64 FX is ideal for single processor workstations. It's fast, it's 64bit and it would take very little effort to get Solaris ported to it. It fills a weak spot in Sun's armoury, where single-processor SPARC machines just aren't clocking high enough to compete with competitors' Intel based offerings. And, because it's only a single processor capable chip, Athlon 64 doesn't interfere with Sun's more lucrative multiprocessor offerings." 09/26/03 Microsoft hypes Windows XP 64bit Edition for Athlon - the inquirer "Coupled with a top-of-the-range nVidia graphics card, an Athlon 64 FX running a 32bit version of UT2003 on 64bit Windows cranked out 279FPS in Flyby and 93FPS in Botmatch. That was pretty much exactly the same speed as it achieved running on 32bit Windows. Just to give some comparison, Dave had an XP3200+ run the UT benchmark too, that managed 197 and 71FPS. It would be interesting to see how much of a boost a 64bit version of UT would give." 09/26/03 Why Intel's Prescott will use AMD64 extensions - the inquirer "So, why is this again? Simple, MS. Microsoft will not support a different 64 bit platform, and frankly I don't blame it, it costs a lot of money to do that. MS gave Intel the choice, support AMD's instruction set, or do without Windows. MS won that battle pretty handily. " 09/26/03 Sun's Java Desktop System Supports AMD Athlon 64 Processor - N&S "AMD has collaborated with Sun to bring 32- and 64-bit desktop support to the enterprise on AMD64 technology," said Rich Heye, vice president and general manager of AMD's Microprocessor Business Unit. But the long and the short of it is that Socket 940 requires a 6 to 9 layer motherboard and Socket 939 only requires a 4 layer design, making the motherboards much cheaper for chips using the latter. " 09/26/03 AMD-hosted WLAN used to infect security hack's PC - The Register AMD would like you to know that its mobile Athlon 64 goes very nicely with 802.11 wireless networking. And in a bid to get hacks assembled at its Cannes launch event this week to think 'wireless', the chip maker thoughtfully laid on a WLAN for them to use to quickly file column inches for their respective rags" 09/25/03 nVENTIV Mach II: The Athlon 64 FX at 2.8 GHz - Ace's Hardware "Thus Prescott should be around 4.9 GHz before it beats the Athlon 64 FX at 2.8 GHz. Takes this all with a grain of salt, of course, since Prescott is not the same as a Pentium 4 EE as we explained earlier, but looking at 2.8 GHz numbers it seems that the integrated memory controller is a weapon that becomes more dangerous at higher clock speeds." 09/25/03 Details Emerge on Plans for AMD's Athlon 64 Chips - eWeek "On Wednesday, HP executives said that the company didn't anticipate any supply issues with the chip. HP will deploy the Athlon 64 in configure-to-order desktops through the end of the year, then launch selected HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario notebooks in the second and third quarters of 2004. Unfortunately, AMD released the chip after HP had already planned its fall PC lineup, once HP source said. " 09/25/03 Overclocked Pentium 4 Extreme Edition trounced by Athlon FX-51 system - the inquirer "On the other hand, AMD's chip will leap ahead of Intel's 32-bit spoiler when running a 64-bit operating system with 64-bit apps. Intel's claim to The INQUIRER, that the P4 hyperthreading Extreme Edition would be the "fastest chip available from any manufacturer this year" has fallen flat on its virtual face. Sorry guys."
