| Custom ASIC Designed for Industry Standard Server Scalability Achieves Major Technical Milestone AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 7 -Newisys, a Sanmina-SCI Company (Nasdaq: SANM) and leading developer of enterprise-class server & storage designs, today announced the expansion of its technology portfolio with the introduction of the Newisys ExtendiScale Architecture. The Newisys engineering team achieved this significant milestone by taping-out the ASIC chip technology earlier this month. "This architecture is a modular and evolutionary approach that delivers high-end RISC/UNIX performance with cost-effective technology," said Phil Hester, chief executive officer of Newisys. "Unlike clusters, the ExtendiScale Architecture preserves the SMP programming model, enabling customers to run current applications faster and tackle much larger problems easier." ExtendiScale Architecture in Action The ExtendiScale Architecture enables aggregation and flexible distribution of server resources through partitioning. Initial implementation of the custom ASIC will be coupled with 4-way AMD Opteron(TM) processor-based servers that are outfitted with ExtendiScale scalability ports. Through the use of high bandwidth, low-latency cables, users will be able to shape system implementations to meet their real-time resource requirements. 32-way ExtendiScale-based server AMD, maker of the AMD Opteron processor, and technology partner of Newisys, commented: "Newisys' ExtendiScale Architecture coupled with the AMD Opteron processor can offer the datacenter an incredibly powerful platform," said Marty Seyer, vice president and general manager of AMD's Microprocessor Business Unit. "This extension is very complementary to the AMD Opteron processor with Direct Connect Architecture, which can significantly improve overall computation performance by removing the bottleneck of a front-side bus and directly connecting the processors, the memory controller and the I/O." Future packaging alternatives could include server blades and external coherent switches.
