The announcement will take place in February, but the servers may not be released commercially for a while, sources said. The Opteron chip, which debuted last April, has allowed Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD to move from the fringes of the lucrative corporate computing market toward the center. ". However, the boffins at c't used the -QxN to produce code, patched out the CPU type inquiry and so managed to get the code to run on the Athlon 64. As a result the chip notched up a record-breaking Spec score.". The publication selects individuals that represent the most innovative, visionary and results-driven IT executives across diverse industries. Weber is widely credited for leading the development of AMD64 technology - the foundation of the award-winning AMD Opteron and the AMD Athlon 64 processors that offer leading-edge 32-bit performance and 64-bit capability. _____________________________________________ 01/26/04 - AMD Athlon 64-Bit Processors Ever since Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) launched the Athlon 64 processors late last year, there has been a bit of confusion about them all. With the two different chips being so similarly named, Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX, it’s easy to understand the confusion. The purpose of Overclockers Club's article here is not to review the two chipsets, but is merely intended to help clear up some of the confusion around the Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX chips. _____________________________________________ 01/24/03 - How to kill x86 "If Intel had chosen to extend x86 to 64-bits, the most likely result by now is that Intel's competitors would be in much worse shape, with the most likely end result being the complete domination of general purpose CPUs - Intel is certainly not lacking in engineering skills or manufacturing capability. With Itanium, almost all the problems have been strategic - if Itanium fails, it will likely be labeled as the biggest strategic mistake in computing history. As things currently stand, the computer industry looks set to be competitive and innovative for some time to come. For technology enthusiasts and customers, that is surely good news.".
