Earlier news here ======================================= 01/22/03 - Hector Ruiz calls for Collaboration AMD President and CEO Hector Ruiz opened the LinuxWorld 2003 conference today by asserting that early and open collaboration with partners and customers are the critical drivers of true innovation, and praised the Linux community’s commitment to compatibility and open standards as design objectives that put the customer first. "In order to foster and take part in true innovation, we in the semiconductor industry cannot continue to operate on a ‘business as usual’ basis," stated Ruiz. "I think we have to consider a new business model, one that is more collaborative and more connected – more like that of the Linux and open source community. Linux serves as a consistent reminder for the semiconductor industry that the needs of our companies should never outweigh the needs of our customers". Read that here ======================================= 01/22/03 - IBM DB2 database beta ready for Linux At LinuxWorld, AMD today announced beta availability of the 64-bit version of IBM's DB2 Universal Database software for servers based on the upcoming AMD Opteron processor. A demonstration of DB2 database software running on the SuSE Linux operating system with Opteron processors will be featured at the AMD LinuxWorld booth. Read the whole story here ======================================= 01/22/03 - Math Library Support for AMD K8 AMD announced it is working with The Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG) to develop the AMD Core Math Library (ACML) in support of AMD's upcoming Opteron and Athlon 64 processors. Software developers using the ACML optimized for the upcoming Opteron and Athlon 64 will be able to increase accuracy and performance while reducing the overall time and cost of development for both 32- and 64-bit applications and systems running on the AMD 64-bit technology. Customers will benefit from accelerated availability of optimized x86-64 commercial and proprietary applications. Read that here ======================================= 01/22/03 - AMD Teams with Newisys & Sanmina-SCI At LinuxWorld Expo 2003, AMD today announced it is working with technology partner Newisys and contract manufacturer Sanmina-SCI to make available a maximum of 500 AMD Opteron processor-based servers to system builders and end customers for early testing and development of applications on AMD's x86-64 technology. The systems, based on pre-production AMD Opteron processors and Newisys "Khepri" platforms, will be available in two configurations and will be available directly from Sanmina-SCI. Read here ======================================= 01/22/03 - OpenPDA Platform at LinuxWorld Today at LinuxWorld, AMD and Metrowerks, a Motorola company, demonstrated a pre-release version of OpenPDA, a Linux technology-based software platform for the development of personal digital assistants (PDAs) and smart phones running on the AMD Alchemy Solutions Mobile Client Reference Design Kit (RDK). One more from Einux Einux introduces the Acceleron64 family of 64-bit dual processor AMD Opteron-based rackmount servers including the A1840, the first Enterprise-class Opteron-based server and the A1820, the first Carrier-class Opteron-based server. Based on AMD’s latest 8th generation Opteron processors, the Acceleron64 servers are designed to provide optimized 64-bit performance while maintaining backward compatibility to 32-bit x86 applications. Xbitlabs got some AMD insiders' information about an incredible Thoroughbred's yield of 80% which allows a 10$ cost per unit, cheaper than what it was two quarters ago! The same report also states about some difficulties to reach higher speed that forced to delay Athlon 64 and concentrate on Opteron first. Read more here ======================================= 01/22/03 - Mislabled XP 2600+: AMD's answer Inquiring about mislabled processors' rumor (FSB 333 instead of 266), HardOCP's Kyle Bennett asked AMD and received an official statement from the PR department. Although it concerned only a 500 unit batch, Kyle looks rather happy with the way AMD handled the problem: "AMD did a great job on reeling this in and nipping it in the bud before it became a major issue".
