02/04/04 - Why AMD is suddenly in the chips
"Advanced Micro Devices, the computer industry's spunky, pugnacious comeback kid, has had an amazing few weeks. On January 20 it announced that last year's fourth quarter was its first profitable one in over two years. Subsequent news underscores why. AMD's unique 64-bit Opteron chip, its first-ever chip for servers, is becoming so successful so fast that it is forcing the industry's biggest players to change strategies.". Great read from David Kirkpatrick at Fortune here

02/04/04 - Gartner on AMD Opteron
"Gartner has long believed that a market opportunity exists in the space between IA-32 processors and Itanium server technology. Technologically, AMD’s Opteron processor neatly fits this space. However, AMD was challenged to find partners to bring its technology to the broad Windows and Linux server markets. HP’s adoption of AMD's 64-bit Opteron chip meets this challenge.". The rest here...

02/04/04 - AMD see steady Q4 market share
"The competition for market share among x86 processor vendors in the fourth quarter was largely a stalemate, but both Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) profited from higher-selling prices, according to data from Mercury Research released Tuesday.". More at ARNnet here

02/03/04 - Michael Dell Interview
"Well I think this idea of taking the 32-bit instruction set and extending it is good. I don't think AMD is the only company that's thought of that. In fact, I think Intel's kind of on record as talking about that. I don't think they've made a full, official announcement, but they have sort of indicated they have [it], so I think when you sort of step back and you say, what would you do with one if you had it today—I fully expect that there will be a variety of choices there, and we're going to fully participate. ". Read the boring rest at

02/03/04 - Athlon FX at 3.083GHz
Taiwanese site Sina has photos and screenshots of an Athlon FX-53 overclocked to the max with help of some liquid nitrogen. On the supplied screen copies we can see a multiplier pushed from original 12 to 13.5 while the HyperTransport bus speed is at 228.4 MHz instead of 200MHz. All this bring an additional 683MHz from 2.4GHz which is roughly 28%. Sina.com.tw here
