The KT880 is in fact a dual channel chipset for the older, but still popular AMD K7 series CPUs - the Athlon XP. VIA Arena is looking today at a new feature for memory access called DualStream64 with benchmarks compared to single channel mode. It's here and it's worth reading... _____________________________________________ 02/18/04 - Albatron to bundle LindowsOS 4.5! Albatron announced that it will bundle LindowsOS 4.5 with selected Micro ATX mainboards. LindowsOS is a LINUX based operating system with a Windows-like user interface developed by Lindows.comwhich was founded by MP3 mastermind (MP3.com founder) Michael Robertson. The potential for cost savings and access to a plethora of freeware has certainly become an attractive reason for individuals and corporations to transition away from the operating system dominating the PC market today. _____________________________________________ 02/17/04 - Barebone & motherboard reviews of the day 1 - FIC K8T800 Athlon 64 mainboard at MBReview - Price 2 - Jetway S755MAX SiS 755 at Hardwareluxx 3 - Soyo K8USA Dragon Ultra at Hardwareluxx - Price 4 - Plextor PX-708A DVD±RW Burner at 176$ here 5 - DDR 256MB cheaper than 40$ each here! _____________________________________________ 02/17/04 - AMD Athlon 64 CPU reviews of the day 1 - Athlon 64 3000+ at ModSynergy - Price 2 - Athlon 64 3000+ at Exclaim - Price 3 - Seagate 120GB S-ATA 150 HDD less than 100$ here 4 - Linksys Wireless-G Router WRT54G under 80$ here _____________________________________________ 02/17/04 - Xeon & AMD64 64-bit compatibility confirmed It's now clear that Xeon 64-bit extension will be fully AMD64 compatible thanks to Microsoft information regarding Windows Server 2003 64-Bit Version found here: "The Windows Server 2003 family supports two different 64-bit architectures. The first is based on Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC), and supports Itanium processor family. The second is based on 64-bit extensions to the x86 instruction set, and supports both AMD64 and Intel Xeon with 64-bit extension technology." _____________________________________________ 02/17/04 - AMD follows own path to success "Intel is used to getting its way. The No. 1 computer chipmaker has so much market share - around 80% for its many products - that computer makers and competitors almost always follow its lead. So it's a big surprise that No. 2 Advanced Micro Devices, less than one-fifth Intel's size, is expected to make Intel do an embarrassing about-face this week.". With the new low-power AMD Opteron processors, enterprise customers can now employ a common infrastructure based on AMD64 technology at all levels of their enterprise environments — from high-performance clusters to blade servers. The AMD Opteron processors HE (55 watt) and EE (30 watt) for servers and workstations, which are expected to be available in March, bring world-class 32-bit performance and easy migration to 64-bit computing to customers who demand increased compute density, investment protection for the future and the most performance per watt of any processor in their class. _____________________________________________ 02/16/04 - Barebone & motherboard reviews of the day 1 - Gigabyte K8VNXP K8T800 at HardCoreWare - Price 2 - Albatron K8X800 Pro II VIA K8T800 at MektuMods - Price 3 - Soltek Qbic EQ3702M nForce2 SFF at SystemCooling 4 - Gigabyte 7VA Rev. 2 VIA KT400A at techangel - Price 5 - Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2 nForce2 at Fulogic - Price 6 - Gigabyte GA-7S748 SiS748 at Fulogic - Price (<50$!) 7 - Abit AN7 nForce2 Ultra 400 at Viper Lair - Price 8 - Seagate 120GB S-ATA 150 HDD less than 100$ here 9 - Linksys Wireless-G Router WRT54G under 80$ here _____________________________________________ 02/16/04 - AMD, Intel Look to Extend 64-Bit Offerings "AMD, this week will roll out two low-power Opterons, with one model consuming 30 watts and the other 55 watts. Current models consume an average of 89 watts, officials said. The chips, which will ship within a month, will target high-density systems, such as blade servers". Interesting enough, Opteron 848 price falls from 3199$ to 1514$ while Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX 51 ones remain unchanged. _____________________________________________ 02/16/04 - UT2004 Demo for 64-bit Linux available A 64-bit native version of UT2004 for GNU/Linux on the amd64 is now available. This includes both the dedicated server and the 3D graphical client. If you don't have a 64-bit CPU (Opteron, Athlon 64, Athlon 64 FX), you can't use this. If you have an Athlon XP, Athlon MP, or any Intel chip, this isn't for you! If you aren't sure, you probably can't use this. Now if you are a proud owner of AMD64 chip running on 64-Bit OS then head over to Icculus and UT2004 _____________________________________________ 02/16/04 - Sun starts Solaris 10 salutations "Every couple of years, Sun Microsystems kicks off a 'new version of Solaris' celebration. And so the party began this week with Sun's plugs for Solaris 10, which should arrive in the second half of 2004. Linux may have found its way into Sun's StarOffice Impress slides, but Solaris is still king at Sun. The company is making this particularly clear with Solaris 10, releasing the OS with 64-bit versions for both SPARC and Opteron servers.".
