- The Opteron Memory Guide
Surely the best read for the complete understanding of Opteron and memory with some great explanations, mainboard list and benchmarks, about subtile details like dedicated and shared memory bus: "In addition, many are confused as to what they need in order to configure a high-performance Opteron system for themselves. Thus, we grabbed some high-end Opteron CPU's, a ton of memory (well, 6GB to be precise), an array of operating systems, and set on out on a benchmarking adventure of a lifetime!"

- Clackamas faces speed test
Clackamas and Opteron are probably the next wrestlers of the processor market and ITWeek here is trying to figure out what are the contenders' chances: "Rakesh Kumar of analyst firm Meta Group, commented, "The technical superiority of Opteron is always going to be there but that's balanced by Intel's huge muscle in manufacturing and the fact it can afford to sustain low [profit] margins"

- J.P. Morgan investment bank downgrade AMD
J.P. Morgan investment bank cut its rating on the U.S. chip sector to "neutral" from "attractive". The bank also downgraded Intel to "neutral" from "overweight", while AMD was strangely cut for the second time in a row to "underweight" from "neutral" as proven in the stock history here! Shall we think that J.P. Morgan is trying to get more AMD stocks at a lower price? _____________________________________________

- Goodbye to the chip of the future?
Great to start the day, the week and the month with a sweet read of another chapter of the Intel's failures tale: "How did AMD outmaneuver Intel? The plucky underdog bet that existing chip technology would continue to double its performance every 18 months -- just as Intel co-founder Gordon E. Moore had predicted in what became known as Moore's Law. Although Intel also believes in Moore's Law, it felt the Itanium architecture would be superior.". It's here!

- Dell: We will launch AMD-based servers!
In a recent interview to French O1Net,
Michael Dell confirms that Dell servers with Opteron inside are on the way: "As for knowing if having both Intel and AMD servers offering in Dell's catalog make sense, the answer is clearly yes". 01Net original interview is here while a rough translation (where waiter means server) is here too

- Too Many Missteps In Intel's Flash Dance
Investors has some ISuppli stats about Flash sales for 2003 showing that Spansion, the AMD-Fujitsu ex-FASL, did really good progress: "ISuppli says the top flash supplier last year was Korea's Samsung, with $2.26 billion in flash sales. Then it's a virtual dead heat between Japan's Toshiba and the venture of Japan's Fujitsu and Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD, which owns 60% of Spansion. Toshiba and Spansion both posted flash sales of a little more than $1.8 billion in 2003, iSuppli says. ISuppli late last week was still calculating final numbers for those two. Intel followed at $1.69 billion.". Read at Investors here

- Coming soon: 64 bit for all!
Another day, another proof of AMD 64-Bit efficient policy and specially when compared to DEC Alpha: "AMD has succeeded where the Alpha failed. It’s AMD64 technology has infiltrated nearly every PC market, from high end servers and clustering to laptops. Quite an achievement for AMD, but let us not forget that AMD has far more brand recognition than the Alpha ever had.". At Bjorn3D here

- Forbes: I Opt for Opteron
Well, sounds like little AMD got some recognition and the recent HP win is surely the strongest signal of Intel inability to respond to market's need: "One of AMD's latest microprocessors, Opteron, is winning over loyal Intel customers, and Intel has now conceded it must match it. Just how seriously Intel miscalculated the needs of business customers became clear in late February when HP, Intel's longtime partner and a codeveloper of its top-of-the-line Itanium chip, said that it would begin using Opteron as well as Intel chips in its low-end and midrange servers". - x86 Technology Boosts Server Market
IDC confirms with number the growing stake of x86 servers: "The new announcements regarding Intel's 64-bit extensions to x86 architecture, and AMD's traction in its first year of Opteron shipments show that this segment is continuing to evolve. IDC expects 2004 to be a tipping point for enterprise x86-architecture server adoption.". Read the rest at ElectronicNews here

02/26/04 - Scientist Opteron is also a musician
Opteron is the scientist community's darling and artists are also courting the chip as KYan-TV reports today here: "The new processor is having an impact outside the tech world. AMD-powered computers are changing the way music is made. Grammy-winner Ray Benson spends a lot of time making hit records. Like many pro musicians, he was at first skeptical of computers in the recording studio."...

02/26/04 - The 64-bit battle
The Economist gives a very clear picture of the 64-Bit situation which does not look too good for Santa Clara giant:
"Fred Weber, technology chief at AMD, likens Itanium to Esperanto. Nobody wants to learn a new language, he says, no matter how elegant it is. Hence the appeal of AMD's chip, which offers cheap 64-bit power without compromising the performance of existing 32-bit software." Read the rest at The Economist here

02/26/04 - Overclocking the AMD Athlon XP-M 2500+
Tech Report is playing with this new overclocking star: "The chips have become so popular so quickly that their street price has jumped 33% in recent days. Of course, given the accounts of overclocking to 2700MHz "on air" (using only a heatsink/fan) it's no wonder they're so popular. Needless to say, we couldn't sit this one out, so last week we ordered up an Athlon XP-M 2500+, and have spent the last 24 hours or so putting it through its paces. Read on to find out more about this overclocking wonder, and see how our particular chip fared.". Read here and enjoy more 2500+ OC here

- AMD & Microsoft new security technology
AMD announced today that AMD64 processors combined with the upcoming Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) will help computers to better withstand attacks from certain classes of viruses and worms. The combination of the AMD64 processor and Windows XP SP2 technologies will help provide customers enhanced security allowing home and business users to experience safer e-mail and Internet browsing, and increased network and memory protection.
