Earlier news here _____________________________________________ 04/05/04 - AMD to spin off chip lab Biz Journal reports here about AMD's intention to spin off its testing division to create a wholly owned subsidiary called Cerium Laboratories: "The AMD's Process Characterization and Analysis Lab has been testing wafers produced at all of AMD's chip factories. But at the end of April, as AMD searches for ways to cut costs and generate more revenue, AMD is spinning out that lab as a separate company.". _____________________________________________ 04/05/04 - More awards for AMD's team and chip AMD's chief technical officer Fred Weber, and the AMD64 design team have been awarded EDN Magazine's Innovator of the Year for a significant advance in technology. The AMD Athlon 64 processor was chosen as Innovation of the Year in the processor category. It can be downloaded for free here _____________________________________________ 04/03/04 - Barebone & Motherboard reviews of the day 1 - AOpen AK86-L VIA K8T800 at 3DXtreme - Price 2 - AOpen AK86-L VIA K8T800 at A1 Electronics - Price 3 - nForce3 250 preview at neoseeker 4 - AMD Athlon 64 2800+ at 175$ at Monarch here 5 - ATI Radeon 9200 SE 64MB graphic card at 38$ here _____________________________________________ 04/03/04 - AMD: Per Aspera Ad Astra 15 pages of interesting guesses on AMD's future, covering HTT2.0, DDR 2, K9 and more at Russian-US site X-bit labs: "AMD shouldn’t forget, though, that Hyper-Threading does provide some advantages to the competitor processors in some applications, especially in a multitasking environment. So this technology should receive some kind of answer. Dual-core processors would make a good and effective response". Following AMD footsteps, and betting heavily on this new technology success, Intel's marketing division thought it would be a good idea to call the coming chip with the name of Clonium 5. At time of writing we don't have yet the logo for the chosen name but we heard it will mention something like: "AMD Inside..." ;) _____________________________________________ 04/01/04 - Intel spills the beans Another smart story on Intel's chance of success with 64-bit upcoming chip. It's from smart Peter N. Glaskowsky at Reed-Electronics and it's really worth a read: " expect AMD to strengthen its competitive position in the x86 server market in 2004. It will be easier for the company to reduce the cost and complexity of its high-volume Opterons than for Intel to boost the performance of its high-end Xeons. Intel's addition of 64-bit extensions doesn't change this situation". Enjoy this too at Reed-Electronics here _____________________________________________ 03/30/04 - AMD and Intel Harmonize on 64 Intel must be proud after spending some time on reversing AMD technology and simply mimicking it like a vulgar clone maker ... Ouch! "because Intel virtually reverse-engineered its 64-bit extensions from AMD64. An independent analysis by Microprocessor Report indicates both companies are correct. Except for a few minor differences, the two 64-bit architectures are identical.". Graphics cards will add a signifigant boost to a system, provided it has the horsepower to deal with it, and the Barton may be slower but it's no slouch". Enjoy that here _____________________________________________ 03/29/04 - Barebone & Motherboard reviews of the day 1 - ASRock K8S8X Athlon 64 board at Planet 3DNow! - Price 2 - Gigabyte K8NNXP Socket 940 at Short-Media - Price 3 - AOpen Athlon 64 boards roundup at OC Café - Price 4 - ATI Radeon 9200 SE 64MB graphic card at 38$ here 5 - Shuttle SK41G barebone at less than 149$ here _____________________________________________ 03/29/04 - AMD Athlon 64 in Microsoft XBox 2 Taking in account timing and rumors, Rob Enderle at Tech News World think there are good chance to find an AMD Athlon 64 in the next Microsoft game console Xbox 2: "My best guess, given the timing of the product and the new PlayStation 3, is that it will be based on the AMD 64-bit core that IBM helped develop". So, from Moscow to Sydney Microsoft will bring the holly message: "64-bit computing is closer than you think!". More about Windows 64-Bit here _____________________________________________ 03/29/04 - Tadpole makes leap to Opteron Another Opteron-win for AMD reported by CNET. Sun's old friend portable servers-maker firm Tadpole is now considering making Opteron-based notebook and that's rather good news: "Tadpole's Opteron machine is likely to fill in product gaps between the company's Talin portable, which is based on Intel Pentium 4 processors and uses the Linux operating system, and its UltraSparc processor machines, such as the Sparcbook.". The rest at CNET here _____________________________________________ 03/29/04 - Intel sued over SSE & Hyperthreading The Register has a news about a media processor company called MicroUnity Systems Engineering claiming Intel and Dell are both using patended technologies without paying for them: "The company did not provide specifics - it has been assigned 59 patents, according to the US Patent Office - but the alleged infringing technologies include Intel's Streaming SIMD Extensions (SSE) versions 1 and 2, and HyperThreading." No 64-Bit enabled for retail until proper OS (which probably means that Linux is not a "proper" OC in Intel's mind) and 64-Bit enabled to integrator that ask for it (Dell first in the line we guess...): "Although all Prescott CPUs, including Intel Pentium 4 and Celeron, are 64-bit from micro-architectural standpoint, processors supplying for retail channels as well as for typical desktops will have their 64-bit capability disabled.".
