04/02/03 - 5.0 Fortran and C compilers for  Opteron
The Portland Group Compiler Technology team of STMicroelectronics today announced
here the availability of a Beta Release of the PGI Workstation 5.0 Fortran and C compilers for Opteron. This is the first publicly available release of STMicroelectronics' upcoming suite of optimizing software development tools for AMD 64-bit technology processors. The PGI Workstation compilers and tools are used by scientists and engineers to solve some of the world's most challenging technical computing problems in weather modeling, geophysical processing, aerodynamic simulation and related fields.

ZDNet UK reports on
64-Bit path taken by Intel which does not believe in economical 32-64-Bit the way AMD or Apple do, will stick to its original Itanium strategy and will not insist on offering x86-64 solution any time soon: "Four separate design teams at Intel examined how the company could take one of its 32-bit chips and transform it into a 64-bit machine, said Richard Wirt, another senior fellow at Intel. After running simulations, all four teams concluded that such a transition wouldn't be economically feasible". Read this great report here

The inquirer reports about Microsoft's 64-bit operating system for AMD64 (Athlon 64 and Opteron) which codename seems to be Anvil. According to the report, AMD x86-64's Anvil is a chance for MSFT to bring 64-bit to the mass and claims it runs 32-bit with excellent performance and compatibility. Read this here

- AMD reach milestones in transistor tech!
AMD's researchers have become the first in the semi industry to achieve critical research milestones for next-generation transistor development. In lab work to be fully unveiled in June, AMD researchers have created and demonstrated a high-performance transistor that is up to 30% faster than the best published PMOS (P-channel metal-oxide semiconductor) transistor today. The transistor employs proprietary AMD technologies involving what is commonly referred to as Fully Depleted Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI). Read more here

As reported yesterday, we have now the official announcement of the memorandum of understanding (MOU), signed by AMD and Fujitsu, about the creation of a common company for the production of flash memories. The new structure, called
FASL, will be funded with both companies flash's production assets and AMD ownership is to be 60% while Fujitsu will get the remaining 40%. Read more details here

SUN's growing interest for Opteron thanks to its build-in 32-bit capabilities that competitor Itanium only emulates: "We are not seeing or hearing anything from our customers and ISVs that indicates they want or need Itanium. Piopio has a great way to increase the CPU multiplier, on Athlon XP 1700+, to access unreached summit with just two wires between pins VCC and A123 on one side and pins VCC and AN25 on the other. SJ Mercury News reports here than long time partner are going to transform the actual FASL joint venture into a new structure which name isn't yet known.
