A group of chip makers, among which we have AMD, is already applying for certification as reported in Digi Times: "Companies including Conexant Systems, Atheros Communications and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), have expressed their willingness to support WAPI standards and are ready to cooperate with Taiwanese suppliers to market WAPI-certified products in China". "Although details about the first product to migrate to the 90-nm process were not disclosed, a presentation by Sonderman given the day before the Semicon Europa exhibition here referred to the AMD64 family of Opteron and Athlon chips and the AMD 64-bit Opteron processor in particular". The company's vice president of operations, Jon Prall, says the fact that a white box dual-processor Opteron was able to outperform a much more expensive four-processor Sun 480 system turned him into a believer". "demand for chips is growing in China, so performing some tasks there can cut down on transportation or, potentially, reduce tax costs -- China is currently in dispute with the United States over a tax that leads to a surcharge on finished chips imported into China.". CNET has it here _____________________________________________ 04/14/04 - AMD has better than expected Q104 results AMD just posted smashing result for the ending quarter but, surprisingly, it looks this was not enough to boost the stock price: "First quarter sales increased by 73 percent from the first quarter of 2003 and increased by three percent from the fourth quarter of 2003. In the first quarter of 2003, AMD reported sales of $715 million and a net loss of $146 million, or $0.42 per share. In the fourth quarter of 2003, AMD reported sales of $1.2 billion and net income of $43 million, or $0.12 per diluted share". According to the site, AMD should post a .3$ per share on sales of 1.17B$ up 63% "Analysts say AMD has been able to turn around its fortunes and gain market share from Intel thanks to its 64-bit Opteron and Athlon chips for servers and desktops, which have more processing power than Intel's 32-bit Pentium family of chips". Enjoy the good news here _____________________________________________ 04/12/04 - Opteron motherboard sales on the rise MSI did bet the farm on dual-Opteron motherboard like the K8D Master 3 and the bet looks to be paying off big time: "Andy Tung, senior product manager at MSI Computer, a City of Industry, Calif.-based motherboard vendor, said two-way Opteron-based motherboards are far outselling one-way models, especially for solution providers building 1U rack-mount servers.". CRN has the story right here _____________________________________________ 04/12/04 - AMD settles legal disputes with Intergraph Few days after Intel did, AMD has reached an agreement with Intergraph in order to end up all legal disputes on patents: "Under the terms of the license, AMD will pay Intergraph $10 million by May 7, 2004 and will make additional cash payments equal to 2% of the AMD Computation Product Group's pre-tax operating profits, if any, in the 2005, 2006 and 2007 calendar years subject to a cap of $5 million per year".
