05/06/05 - Socket S1 and Socket M2 at AMD
Those expecting  a new 1207-pin socket are going for a major surprise. According to various sources, the two new AMD sockets are far from that expectation:
Socket S1: made for notebooks this socket is way smaller that 734 counterpart with only 638 pins under the hood. The 638-pin socket S1 answer the need for smaller processor with lighter consumption and less heat.
Socket M2: Still with 940 pins this socket is not pin-to-pin compatible with the first version. This socket-M2 is announcing an expected shift to DDR2 with a new design ot the integrated northbridge.

- AMD/Tyan & SUSE set LAN  throughput record
A series of tests conducted in April at the Neal Nelson & Associates benchmarking laboratory measured a sustained data rate of 6.5 gigabits per second from a single 2U form factor server powered by AMD Opteron processors. One endurance test ran continuously for 48 hours and transferred over 1,000 terabits (1 petabit) of user data between 96 FTP client machines and the single FTP server.
