Our benchmarks show the Opteron 244 processor provides superior performance on compute-intensive tasks, such as the GPG encryption used in our tests. The news means even future versions of Itanium 2 may not be significantly faster than future Opterons". We are stunned to learn that MSI has produced the first motherboard socket 940 dual Opteron that works with Athlon 64 (socket 754) too! The board is named K8D Master2 FAR and, at time of writing, we're not fully certain if the board will request any kind of adaptor to fit the Athlon 64 into the Opteron socket or if AMD is going to produce a socket 940 version of the Athlon 64! Whatever solution will be implemented, we are already 100% sure that MSI is using the K8T800 (formerly K8T400M) chipset and southbridge VT8237 recently announced. This mainboard is a new step toward corporate acceptance for AMD64 technology even though we find all this a bit confusing... ____________________________________________ 07/12/03 - High End Workstation Chipsets "Opteron or Athlon64 and nForce3 Pro should make for an exciting AMD comeback. This article's focus is to bring high end hardware to the usual reader and to give a little taste into what goes on in the space above the consumer arena."
