- Sanmina and Newisys is Good for Opteron
"The combination of Newisys' technology and Sanmina's manufacturing capabilities will encourage more server vendors to consider selling a Newisys Opteron server, said Phil Hester, chief executive officer and co-founder of Newisys. Japanese site Akiba PC Hotline confirms
here the arrival in Tokyo's stores of the single Opteron motherboard from Asus. The nForce3 Pro 150 powered motherboard is selling already for a price of 27500Yens (230US$) which is quite good for a brand new design and should help to boost the Opteron sales.

07/16/03 - Athlon 64 official launch date
AMD  today announced the worldwide launch of the AMD
Athlon 64 processors for desktop and notebook PCs will be in San Francisco on Sept. 23, 2003. The upcoming AMD Athlon 64 processor will be the world's first and only 64-bit desktop and notebook PC processor featuring the compatibility and performance offered by the AMD64 architecture.  The AMD Athlon 64 processor is expected to provide world-class 32-bit performance, while offering PC users a seamless transition to the next generation of computing. Because the AMD Athlon 64 processor is built on the AMD64 platform, it is designed to be compatible with today's 32-bit software and hardware applications pervasive in desktop and notebook computing.

07/16/03 - AMD reduces loss and improves gross margin
AMD today reported sales of $645 million and a net loss of $140 million for the quarter ended June 29, 2003.  The net loss amounted to $0.40 per share. Second quarter sales increased by seven percent from the second quarter of 2002 and decreased by 10 percent from the first quarter of 2003.  In the second quarter of 2002, AMD reported total sales of $600 million and a net loss of $185 million, or $0.54 per share.  In the first quarter of 2003, AMD reported sales of $715 million and a net loss of $146 million, or $0.42 per share. 07/16/03 - NVIDIA readies PCI Express onslaught
"During next year, Nvidia plans to introduce a total of three different PCI Express chipsets for the Athlon64 & Opteron microprocessors, taking advantage of the faster throughout the bus provides. The first plank of its PCI Express onslaught will be a chipset tentatively called Crush 3GIO, which will take advantage of the increased graphics capabilities of PCI Express". Read the inquirer here

"Newisys, the star-studded Texas server start-up that bet the farm on AMD's new Opteron chip, reportedly canned 20%-25% of its people the other day in preparation for being acquired.  Unfortunately there haven't been enough orders, observers say, and Newisys has reportedly burned through something like $58 million without the chip catching fire."

- MSI Master2-FAR no longer Athlon 64's friend!
After announcing the double Opteron & Athlon 64 compatibility here our sweet Japanese friends from Akiba Hotline are showing today a completely different picture. The MSI Master2-FAR is not Athlon 64 ready as stated earlier and is not even in production. In fact some MSI friend are telling us that 0B revision, pre-production version and its beta BIOS, are is still in testing stage. The sample shown in Akihabara are not working and cannot be considered as final.  Read Akiba Hotline erratum here

- nVidia to make Athlon64 notebook chipset
"A representative of nVidia in Taiwan has told a local newspaper that his firm will have a notebook chipset for the Athlon 64 microprocessor inside a year... Drew Henry said the firm is ready to shift most of its nForce3 chipsets to .13µ (micron) technology". Read the inquirer here
