09/16/03 - Sun Upgrades Entry-level Server Line
"The V250 can also be configured with up to six PCI co-processor cards, which are full Windows or Linux servers in blade form. The cards are based on Advanced Mico Devices' Athlon XP 1600 processor. This makes the V250 the only server to be able to run Solaris, Windows, and Linux applications natively". Read crn here

09/15/03 - Intel CTO: 64-bit desktop unnecessary
So when will 64-bit computing on the desktop become a necessity? "As a rule of thumb, address space [requirements] consume a bit every two years," he said. "We're at 1GB now and starting to see 2GB. So we're probably about three of four years away from really needing that 4GB on general desktops. That puts you out in the 2006/07 timeframe.". Read the fun stuff at The Register

09/15/03 - HyperTransport technology: getting acquainted
"By using a narrow but high speed bus we see advantages such as easy routing, low power consumption and easy implementation. The latter is probably the most important as AMD need the motherboard manufacturers to support their new processor as soon as it comes out. By glancing at the popular motherboard makers that looks to be a certainty. HyperTransport is versatile too, allowing other buses like PCI, PCI-X to be connected through the use of 'tunnels'".  See the report at UK Gamer here

09/15/03 - Will 64 bits be a hit?
"For more than a decade, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has played the likeable underdog to Intel Corp. in the war for personal computer processor sales. It was the likeable underdog, analysts say, because the chip maker was enough of a threat to pressure Intel to speed up product introductions and to reduce the prices on at least some of its chips.". 09/12/03 - Athlon 64 in Japan store already!
Akiba2Go! has photos and story
here, revealing that AMD Athlon 64 3200+ OPN ODA3200AEP5AP bulk edition and MSI Athlon 64 motherboard K8T NEO-FIS2R are both selling at Akihabara, the huge Tokyo computer area. The report also provide a list of a dozen store selling the bundle (board+chip) for an average of 77500Yen (660$) which can be wisely compared to Barton 3200+ and MSI KT6 found at Dealtime for around 600$. This comparison confirms AMD's intention to create huge demand for 64BIT applications thanks to 64BIT for the price of 32!

09/12/03 - Optimized DLLs for Quake3
Some speedy genius has created new Quake 3 DLLs to boost the frame rate when running the game with  K6, Duron and various Athlon versions. The result speaks for itself :
"my computer (Athlon XP 2.5GHz, 218fsb, 3-4-4-10 ram timings, Geforce 3 standard, Nforce2) running a low detail Quake 3 'four' timedemo at 735fps (yes, 735fps!) with my tweak DLLs". Enjoy the boost here

09/12/03 - AMD ready to launch AMD64ZONE.COM?
In the Texan game of pulling the trigger faster, it seems that AMD was the winner in registering the most desirable name of the moment: AMD64ZONE.COM! This one is now the full property of the Austin hero as reported at whois.net
here. According to the page you'll see there, the name was registered on January 31 and Google acknowledges here that AMDboard.com was first to mention it!

09/11/03 - AMD K9 multi-core in 2005
Japanese Hirogishe's Weekly oversea news at PCWatch
here is publishing the ultimate AMD roadmap from K6 at 350nm to K9 at 45nm (in 2008). The report also explain why, thanks to overlapping development teams, new processor cores can be released every 3 years which is half of what it used to be few years ago. Following this logic, K9 processor with multi-core and Palladium - built-in security - should come to life no later than 2005!

09/11/03 - Transform AMD Duron Into AMD Athlon XP
"There is hardly a point to transform a $45 Duron processor into a $60 Athlon XP one, but, on the other hand, such modification is very interesting from theoretical point of view. We remember that AMD Athlon XP “Thorton” processors are set to appear in the market pretty soon, given that Thorton core is an altered Barton core and has only 256KB of L2 in contrast to Barton’s 512KB of L2, we assume that there will be a way to transform Thorton into Barton winning a massive gain in performance" .
