10/07/04 - AMD reports third quarter earning
AMD today reported sales of $1.239 billion and net income of $44 million for the quarter ended Sept. 26, 2004. Net income amounted to $0.12 per diluted share. Third quarter sales increased by 30 percent compared to the same period in 2003 and decreased by two percent from the second quarter of 2004. In the third quarter of 2003, AMD reported sales of $954 million and a net loss of $31 million, or $0.09 per share. In the second quarter of 2004, AMD reported sales of $1.262 billion and net income of $32 million, or $0.09 per diluted share. We have more here

Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc.announced that the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service has selected the new Cray XD1 supercomputer to help improve the Forest Service's ability to predict and track the paths of smoke plumes from wildfires. - Tatung Opteron blade are coming
AMDboard was first to announce Tatung Opteron blade server and today, it's now UK site Tech World's turn to reveal Tatung's intentions to conquer UK with the sharp weaponery and a  very competitive pricing policy: "Tatung is ahead in terms of the technology for this market. - SiS makes inroads into AMD chipset market
A DigiTimes report is revealing inner intentions of SiS to overtaking VIA as first supplier for AMD platforms:
"According to SiS, the 756FX will also support two PCIe express graphics cards. In addition to supporting Nvidia’s SLI (scalable link interface) solution, SiS claims it is developing a part that will support ATI PCIe cards". Here

- Intel price war on flash behind AMD miss
Good article from Reuters about the reasons behind AMD's yesterday 3rd quarter outlook update: "Analysts blame renewed price competition from Intel, the world's largest chip maker, which recently reentered the non-cellular phone segment for flash memory. Also, analysts say cellular phone inventories are being worked down in Asia, dampening demand for flash memory chips". Read here

- AMD Updates Third Quarter Outlook
AMD announced that net income for the third quarter ended September 26, 2004 is anticipated to increase from the $32 million reported in the second quarter of 2004 despite slightly lower sales. The company’s prior guidance for the third quarter was for sales to be up moderately from second quarter sales of $1.262 billion. Read the news here

- Cray new XD1 supercomputer targets CAE
Cray announced today that the company is targeting computer-aided engineering (CAE) as a primary market for its new Cray XD1 Opteron/Linux-based supercomputer. The Cray XD1 product is "purpose-built" for high performance computing (HPC) applications, including CAE problems, and features breakthrough innovations in interconnect technology, high availability and ease of management. Cray is working with leading Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to exploit the Cray XD1 system's advantages on widely used CAE applications. Read the whole news here

Wyse, the domain experts in server-centric computing (SCC), announced the Citrix iForum conference that the company has selected the

- AMD 90nm power consumption measured
Tech Report Scott Wasson was able to get his hand on a 90nm Athlon 64 3500+ and tested its power consumption versus the 130nm version and 90nm Intel Pentium 4 Prescott. The numbers show the AMD superiority with a
gain of 19 to 29W for the
90nm AMD version compared to equivalent 130nm and a difference of 39 to 84W with the Intel bustamente furnace... Enjoy the numbers here

- Another Red Storm supercomputer sold!
Supercomputer leader
Cray Inc. announced that the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) has received a $9.7 million grant from the National Science Foundation to acquire a Cray  Red Storm-based system with 2,000 AMD Opteron processors & 10 teraflops (trillions of calculations per second) of peak performance is scheduled to be installed at PSC by the end of 2004. 09/30/04 - Hinditron first order in India for Cray XD1
CRAY announced that Hinditron, its representative in India, has secured the first order in that country for the new Cray XD1 supercomputer product. A Cray XD1 system with 96 compute processors and more than 422 billion calculations per second (gigaflops) of peak performance will be installed in late 2004 at the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kolkata (Calcutta).
