- AMD Opteron vs. Intel Xeon in Linux
"
Identical 32-bit program in both. 2.8GHz Xeon vs. 1.8GHz Opteron. Intel hyperhtreading is piss poor, AMD hyperrouting works.  The larger on-chip caches of the Opteron make a huge difference.  Right now it looks like the Opteron has nearly 4X the brute force computational
throughput at 64% of the clock speed"

- nForce2 memory timings explored
A couple of days ago, our friend Piotke read on a Dutch forum a question about the fastest memory timings for an
AMD nForce2 setup. Nobody could give a clear answer, so he started to test the most common used timings and the results are all at Madshrimps for your viewing pleasure...

- Analyst: Sun and IBM to lead 64-bit boom
"In the near term, backing Sun and IBM in 64-bit computing seems like a no brainer. The two companies along with HP have dominated the 64-bit RISC server market, splitting tens of billions in revenue between them. Of these three companies Sun and IBM appear as the two best aligned to ride early x86-64-bit success". Read the whole report at The Register here

- AMD's 64-Bit Bargain
"The Athlon 64 3000+ may have been a stealth release, but unlike other low-key launches, its impact is being felt across the spectrum. The new processor's low sticker price, high-end performance, and incredible value have created a veritable buyer rush, and its low platform costs have provided the first mainstream 64-bit system option. Though Microsoft is still dragging its feet on shipping 64-bit Windows XP, it's now possible for an AMD64 system configuration to hit the elusive $1,000 price point".

12/31/03 - EMachines beats Gateway Sales
"eMachines, best-known for launching a $399 PC five years ago, has seen growth where few others have. In 2003, it overtook Gateway to land the No. 3 spot in U.S. desktop-PC sales, according to market researcher IDC. Emachines is on target to sell 1.8 million to 2 million computers this year, a 30% increase from last year.". Read more at Forbes

12/31/03 - Athlon 64 FX 51 faster than P4 at 5.25GHz!
"Given the history of THG and their decidedly negative (some might say Intel-funded) view of the Athlon 64 chips, it's not particularly surprising they'd choose to pull that page, but it does cast further doubt on the continued relevance of what was once a high-quality tech reporting site". 12/30/03 - Forbes predictions for 2004
"By the third quarter, expect Intel to respond by finally talking publicly about plans to follow AMD's model for 64-bit computing by extending the life of its core x86 instruction set into the 64-bit world. Meanwhile, watch for AMD to land an unexpectedly large purchase order for Opteron chips from a major computer manufacturer. ".

12/29/03 - AMD estimates raised
AMD estimates raised above consensus at Bernstein.  Bernstein believes that AMD's Q4 is tracking above consensus due to both the PC processor and flash memory businesses; firm raises their Q4 sales/EPS ests to $1.118 bln/$0.07 from $1.082 bln/$0.01 (consensus $1.074 bln/$0.03), and raises their 2004 est to $0.40 from $0.22 (consensus $0.26) due to their increased conviction that AMD will drive out costs in its flash memory biz and benefit from increasing blended average selling prices in its processor business during 2004...

12/29/03 - AMD Athlon 64 3000+ review
"Athlon 64 3000+ can outperform even faster Intel CPUs in most benchmarks. We can also state that Athlon 64 3000+ is faster than Athlon XP 3200+. This way, it definitely means that this processor is one of the best buys in its price category from price-to-performance point of view." 12/27/03 - The year 2003 in processor form
"Its been a big year for processors and, interestingly, in areas outside the traditional desktop space. The year began with Centrino, Intel's ground up redesign of mobile processing and finished with Athlon 64, AMD's number crunching, x86-based, 64-bit processor. And both Intel and AMD debuted new 64-bit server offerings - the Opteron from AMD, and the second-gen Intel Itanium.". PC Pro

12/27/03 - Teams Forming for 64-Bit Migration
"Specifically regarding the rapid adoption of x86-64 products in 2004/05, we believe that those vendors who have most aggressively embraced this market are likely to have the opportunity for share gains," he wrote. "In particular, we note that Sun Microsystems and IBM are the most aggressive and best positioned server vendors in this emerging x86-64 market.". Enjoy more at ServerWatch
